"Time in nature is not leisure time;

It’s an essential investment in our children’s health."

-Environmental education advocate and researcher Richard Louv

Opposites, when considered separately can imply dichotomy, but when considered together lead to balance.  We want students to be independent and self-actualizing; but also interdependent, skilled at team work and making connections. We sometimes think of science as an "indoor" activity to do in the lab, but when we can make connections to the great outdoors and the world around us, science can really come alive. Even Larchmont as a school acts as a symbol of balance, where we bring together people across lines of difference to make connections that make us stronger. As we continue to prepare our eighth graders for high school and beyond, we wanted to take one more special opportunity to prepare them with the steadiness of footing necessary for what's to come.

AstroCamp is a unique outdoor science program providing an exciting outdoor educational experience. Our focus on hands-on experiential science, utilizing state-of-the-art labs and equipment, increases science literacy and stimulates interest in the sciences. AstroCamp’s expert instructors guide students through an exploration of the universe with astronomy labs, physical science labs, field exercises, and team-building activities. AstroCamp is designed to stimulate minds, build character, develop social skills, and most importantly, create excitement about science.

Julianna Valderas, an LCS 8th grader who attended AstroCamp Institute as a 5th grader in 2013, spoke about AstroCamp's importance in her academic and social-emotional development:

"Astrocamp was so cool!  You really learn about nature because...you’re in it!  More than that, I got to get out of my comfort zone, trust others, and learn how to best work together.  I couldn’t believe I was learning WHILE having fun!"

Donate now and change a child forever. A donation of $275 covers the full cost of one eighth grader's AstroCamp tuition. As you donate for your child's experience, please consider donating to help another child attend AstroCamp as well. Your financial gift ensures that we have the means to provide each and every student with this rich, powerful multi-sensory, whole-child learning experience--making nature’s incredible variety and complexity of materials and processes accessible, powerful stimulants to these young adults' innate curiosity, perseverance, critical thinking, health and empathy.

Help us give the Larchmont Charter School 8th graders the opportunity to build community and their autonomy as young adults in deep, meaningful ways. Help us teach these Larchmont 8th graders how to rise to new expectations and standards. Help us increase their connections with each other, their teachers and their physical environment. Help us build a culture of common language, values, purpose, and connection, rooted in our Larchmont Charter mission and vision.

AstroCamp Institute camping is an experience to remember for these students and May 2017 is fast approaching. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!

All funds raised are shared equally to all students.

Donating $275 or more will help all our children attend this amazing camp.
